Homeowners are starting to ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews who the best plumber in town is — and getting one answer instead of ten blue links. This page explains, without hype, what decides whether that answer is you.

What actually changed

For twenty years the goal was a ranking: be one of the ten results, earn the click. AI search compresses that. The homeowner asks a question in plain language and gets a short answer naming two or three companies, assembled from sources the model trusts.

The part most people get wrong is assuming this is a new game requiring new tricks. It isn't. AI answers about local contractors are assembled from things you already control: your website content, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your citations, and what other credible sites say about you. The signals are familiar. What changed is the stakes — being the fourth-best answer used to earn a click, and increasingly earns nothing.

Terms you'll hear for this: AI search optimization, generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), LLM SEO. They describe the same work. We are not going to sell you four services for it.

What we do about it

Answer the questions directly. AI systems lift clear, self-contained answers. Pages that state the answer plainly — what a water heater replacement costs in your market, how long a furnace should last, what an emergency call involves — get quoted. Pages that bury the answer under 600 words of throat-clearing do not.

Structured data, done properly. Local business, service, FAQ and review schema tell machines exactly what you do, where you do it and how you're rated. This is the cheapest, most under-used work in the trade.

Entity consistency. Your name, address, phone, service area and services must match everywhere they appear. A model assembling an answer discards sources it can't reconcile. Inconsistent citations don't just cost rankings anymore — they cost inclusion.

Reviews, in volume and in detail. Reviews are among the strongest signals for "best" and "most trusted" queries, and detailed reviews mentioning specific services and towns give models the language they need. This is one more reason Reputation Management is not optional.

Third-party corroboration. Models weight what independent sources say about you more heavily than what you say about yourself. Local press, associations, supplier and manufacturer listings, genuine local links.

Google Business Profile depth. Complete categories, services, service areas, photos, posts and Q&A. For local queries this profile is one of the most heavily-weighted inputs there is.

Then measure it. We check what the major assistants say when asked the questions that matter in your market — who's the best, who's open now, who does emergency work — and track whether you're named.

What we will not tell you

  • That SEO is dead. It isn't. The same content, profile, review and citation signals feed both classic rankings and AI answers. Anyone selling AI search as a replacement for SEO is selling you the same work twice.
  • That we can guarantee ChatGPT will name you. Nobody can. These systems don't publish a ranking algorithm, and their answers vary by phrasing, location and session.
  • That this is urgent enough to skip the fundamentals. If your service pages are thin and you have eleven reviews, AI search is not your problem. The fundamentals are the AI strategy.

Why contractors are well placed here

Local home services is one of the areas where AI answers lean hardest on verifiable, structured, local signals — profile data, reviews, service areas, real business information. That favours companies who have done the unglamorous work consistently over years, and it is very hard for a competitor to buy their way past in a quarter.

The contractors we expect to be named through this shift are the ones already investing in content depth, review velocity and clean local data. That work compounds, which is exactly why it's worth starting before the answer changes.

AI search questions we get asked

Is this a separate service I have to buy?No. It is built into how we do Search Engine Optimization, because the signals overlap almost entirely. We are not going to invoice you twice for one body of work.
Can you get me into ChatGPT's answers? We can materially improve the odds by strengthening the signals these systems read. We cannot guarantee an outcome inside a system nobody outside the company controls, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does.
Is AI going to kill my search traffic? It is changing it. Informational searches — "how long does a furnace last" — are the most exposed. Local intent searches with a real job attached still overwhelmingly produce clicks and calls, and that's where your revenue is.
Should I stop doing SEO and do this instead? No, and it's the wrong frame. Content quality, Google Business Profile completeness, review velocity and citation consistency are the AI strategy. They're also the SEO strategy.
How do I know if it's working? We query the major assistants with the questions homeowners in your market actually ask, and track whether you're named — alongside the numbers that pay the bills: calls, booked jobs and cost per acquisition.
