The 5 Questions Every Contractor Asks Before Hiring a Marketing Agency

Before a plumbing, HVAC, or electrical contractor signs with us, we get the same five questions almost every single time. They are good questions. They are the questions you should be asking any marketing partner before you hand over your budget and your logins.

So instead of saving the answers for a sales call, here they are in the open.

1. How Long Before I See Results?

The honest answer is that it depends on the channel, which is exactly why we run short term and long term strategies at the same time.

Paid channels move first. Google Ads, Google Local Service Ads, and database reactivation start producing leads inside the first couple of weeks. That is immediate, controllable lead flow that you can turn up or down.

Organic SEO for plumbers and HVAC contractors is a different animal. You should expect ranking momentum in the first 60 to 90 days and meaningful organic lead flow by months four through six. The tradeoff is worth it, because once you are ranking those leads are essentially free. It is a compounding asset that pays you back month after month while your competitor keeps paying per click or per lead.

The expectation we set on day one, not after you are already frustrated.
Timeframe What Is Happening What You Should See
Month 1 Foundation. Tracking, access, builds, campaign launch. First paid leads inside a couple of weeks.
Month 2 Momentum. Campaigns optimizing, content and citations building. Lower cost per lead, early ranking movement.
Month 3 Authority starts to compound. Organic impressions and map visibility climbing.
Months 4 to 6 Organic becomes a real channel. Meaningful organic lead volume alongside paid.

We also walk you through what normal looks like, because a lot of panic comes from not knowing. Rankings fluctuate. Ads optimize over roughly a 30 day cycle. Cost per lead bounces week to week. We do not panic at that, and neither should you.

This is also why we do not sell services a la carte. SEO without ads means waiting six months hoping for something to show. Ads without SEO means renting your leads forever. The multi channel approach works because the channels feed each other.

2. I Have Been Burned Before. How Is This Different?

This is the most common question we hear, and honestly, we get it. This industry has a trust problem. Plenty of agencies will take your money, send you a nice looking PDF, and hope you do not ask too many questions.

Two things make the difference: specialization and transparency.

Specialization. We only work with plumbing, HVAC, and electrical contractors. We are not learning your industry on your dime. We have done this more than 176 times. We know your keywords, your seasonality, your customer psychology, and your dispatch software.

Transparency. Every month you see exactly what you are getting. Not just impressions. Not just clicks. Not just rankings. Leads by channel, cost per lead, booked jobs, and closed revenue. If it is not working, we both know it, and we fix it. There is no hiding behind jargon.

Our average client has been with us for more than 7 years. People do not stay that long if they are getting burned.

If you want to hear it from contractors instead of from us, read how Kirkwood Heating recovered their Google presence or why Service Pro Electric describes the experience as no pressure and nothing to change.

3. How Much Do I Need to Spend on Ads?

It depends on your size, how aggressively you want to grow, and what your goals are. As a starting point we recommend at least $2,000 per month in ad spend, which covers Google Ads, some Local Service Ads, and retargeting.

But here is how we want you to think about it instead of as a cost line.

Illustrative math. Your real numbers depend on your ticket and close ratio.
Input Example
Average job value $750
Cost per lead $55
Close rate 20 to 30 percent
Cost to acquire one job About $220
Return on the first transaction alone Better than 3 to 1

And that is only the first transaction. It does not count the repeat work, the membership, or the referral that job produces over the next five years.

Meanwhile your top three competitors are not waiting. In most markets they are spending somewhere between $5,000 and $15,000 a month to own the leads you want. Every day you delay is a day they are solidifying position, winning that customer, and owning the relationship. Market share is close to a zero sum game. You either take it or they keep it.

Worth noting: not every dollar has to go to new traffic. Database reactivation generated $84,000 with zero ad spend for one company we work with, and it is usually the fastest money in the building.

Once you see the math, the question stops being how little can I spend and starts being how much can I put into this machine.

4. Do I Need a New Website?

Our honest answer is that even if you have a good website, we are going to bring it up to the world class standard. We have launched more than 350 websites for contractors, and along the way we have identified which factors actually make home service websites convert.

Think about the math on this one. If we take your site from converting at 10 percent, which is roughly the industry average, to 30 percent, which is where we typically land, you have tripled your leads without spending another dollar on traffic.

That upgrade does not just amplify SEO and paid search. It amplifies everything. Every referral, every truck someone sees on the road, every past customer who looks you up, they all land on your website before they call. The same principle is why landing pages make or break Google Ads performance.

Whether your site needs a full rebuild or a tune up, it is included. We do not charge separately for it.

One more thing on the build: we use your photos. Real team, real trucks, real job sites, not stock images. Homeowners want to see who is showing up at their house, and real photos convert two to three times better.

5. What If I Am Already Working With Another Agency?

That is fine. Schedule a strategy session anyway. We will honor what they are doing and give you an honest assessment. If they are doing great work, we will tell you to stay where you are.

But usually someone asking this question is asking because something is not working. In our experience the problem is almost always one of two things:

  1. They are a generalist who does not really understand the contracting business.
  2. They are not tracking results down to closed revenue.

We solve both. We know this industry inside and out, and we track every lead to the dollar. If your current reports stop at clicks and impressions, that is worth a conversation. Lead quality, not lead volume, is usually where the real problem hides.

We also make the rules clear from day one. We are the engine, you are the driver. No confusion about who is doing what.

The Common Thread

Look at all five questions together and they are really one question: can I trust that this will work, and will I be able to tell?

That is why specialization and measurement are the two things we lead with. Everything else is downstream of them. If you want a deeper look at the patterns that separate the contractors who scale from the ones who stall, we broke down what the best plumbing and HVAC contractors do differently based on 13 years of data.
