Launching a plumbing business is never easy, but for Ben Rowell of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, the journey was anything but typical. From his early days as a welder to becoming a Rookie of the Year franchise owner, Ben’s story is proof that persistence, people skills, and the right systems can turn a bold idea into a thriving home service business.
A Blue-Collar Start With a Twist
Ben’s career began in the trades as a welder and fabricator before transitioning into management roles. While he once attempted to move into the corporate “white-collar” world, he quickly realized that it wasn’t a fit.
“I did not enjoy it,” Ben recalls. “It felt corporatized. Everything was about politics, and it was very counterintuitive to who I am.”
That reflection pushed him back toward the trades—where his skills, personality, and ability to build trust with people felt most natural.
Why Franchising?
When considering his next move, Ben weighed the idea of starting from scratch versus joining a proven system. With encouragement from his business partner and best friend, Scott, he explored franchising. After validation and research, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing emerged as the best fit.
The franchise offered what Ben needed:
-
A proven playbook and brand recognition
-
Support for the things he “didn’t know he didn’t know”
-
The autonomy to build a business on his own terms
From Zero to $1.1 Million in Year One
Ben and Scott officially opened their doors on October 16, 2023. The first few months were grueling—balancing operations, hiring, sales, and even plumbing work themselves.
“The first year was extremely hard. You’re flying by the seat of your pants—building systems, scaling, selling, even working in the field. It feels like there’s no end in sight,” Ben says.
But the hard work paid off. While the franchise’s expectation for year one was one or two trucks and $500K–$600K in revenue, Ben’s team surpassed all projections:
-
5 plumbers hired
-
4 vehicles on the road
-
$1.1M in revenue in year one
-
Rookie of the Year Award
Lessons Learned for Other Plumbing & HVAC Owners
Ben’s journey carries valuable lessons for other plumbing, HVAC, and home service business owners:
-
You don’t need to be a master plumber to succeed. Systems, leadership, and customer trust matter just as much.
-
Franchising can accelerate success. A proven playbook helps you avoid common pitfalls.
-
The first six months are the hardest. Expect to grind, but know that persistence builds momentum.
-
Invest in people. Ben’s ability to hire and empower the right team was a cornerstone of his success.
