From Cuba to Charlotte: The Remarkable Family Journey Behind Acosta Heating, Cooling & Electrical

When you look at a long-standing, trusted HVAC and electrical company, it’s easy to see the success—but not always the story behind it. For Acosta Heating, Cooling & Electrical in Charlotte, North Carolina, that story is one of courage, sacrifice, and decades of hard work rooted in family values.

In a recent interview, Lauren, the current President of Acosta, shared the incredible multi-generation journey that shaped the company into the respected home services provider it is today. It’s a story every plumbing, HVAC, and electrical business owner can learn from—especially those working to build legacy, stability, and community impact.

A Family’s Escape From Cuba—and the Last Flight Out

Acosta’s beginnings stretch far beyond Charlotte. Lauren’s father came to the U.S. as a 12-year-old boy when his family fled Cuba during the early years of the Castro regime. During this brief window when Cubans were allowed to leave—with only three changes of clothes and $200—Lauren’s grandmother and father boarded what would unknowingly become the very last flight out of Cuba before the Cuban Missile Crisis shut down all travel.

Her grandfather, who had sold his car to pay for the tickets, stayed behind to negotiate with authorities and planned to follow later. But the airport closed the next morning. For a period of time, Lauren’s father and grandmother were alone in the U.S., eventually starting their new life in Newark, New Jersey.

Finding Community—and Opportunity—in Charlotte

After several years in the Northeast, family connections guided them south to Charlotte, where a Cuban-owned hosiery plant was hiring new arrivals. This small but strong immigrant community became the foundation of what would become the Acosta family’s long-standing connection to the region.

As a teenager, Lauren’s father began working at the hosiery plant, where the owner noticed his natural talent for repairing equipment. That observation led to a life-changing recommendation: Central Piedmont Community College had just launched an HVAC program, and he encouraged the young man to apply.

Despite not yet having a high school diploma, he passed the entrance exam and was accepted. He would eventually finish the program—before earning his GED.

The Start of Acosta Air Conditioning

By the time his father finally reunited with the family in the U.S., Lauren’s dad had already begun building a future in refrigeration and HVAC. His father urged him to take advantage of the opportunity America offered—something that would never have been possible in communist Cuba.

With support from his family, he turned a window of their home into a second entrance and officially launched Acosta Air Conditioning—a one-man operation focused initially on installing air conditioning in homes that had previously only had heating.

What began as a small starter business in the early 1970s grew steadily through reputation, craftsmanship, and word-of-mouth referrals. Over the decades, Acosta expanded beyond air conditioning into heating and eventually electrical services, becoming the fully integrated, highly trusted Acosta Heating, Cooling & Electrical known throughout Charlotte today.

Leading the Company Into its Next Generation

Today, Acosta is more than 53 years strong, and leadership has transitioned into the hands of the next generation. As President, Lauren continues her family’s legacy—honoring the company’s heritage while guiding it forward in a rapidly evolving home services landscape.

Her journey reflects a core truth many plumbing, HVAC, and electrical businesses share: the strongest companies in this industry are built on family, grit, and an unwavering commitment to serving their community.
