The 2021 SEO Formula For Plumbing and HVAC Businesses

SEO is a dynamic game with rules that change with every update of Google's algorithm. Yet, we've found a way to keep up with the latest trends.


Online marketing changes every year. Google tweaks its algorithm all the time, so strategies that worked extremely well just a year or two ago probably aren’t going to work today.

Because of this shifting landscape, it's critical to stay on the cutting edge of what's going on with SEO. We need to make sure that we're doing all the right things to move the needle and avoid anything that could put us in the bad graces of Google.

Of course, the algorithm's changed in 2021, just like in previous years. And once again, the game changed just when we thought we had it figured out.

Luckily, it didn't take us long to figure it out from the bottom up.

In this article, we'll share the SEO formula for 2021 that will help you dominate the search engine in the current year. Specifically, we'll look at the key components that make up this formula and how they can contribute to your SEO efforts.


The Components


Component #1. Figure Out Your Most Important Keywords

Your keywords will be more or less relevant based on your service, service area, and search volume. Therefore, figuring out the most important keywords will require some due diligence on the front end.

Suppose you have a plumbing company. The first keywords that might come to mind would be "plumber" or "plumbing," right?

Actually, people will more likely search for specific services, such as "repiping," "drain cleaning," "tankless water heaters," etc.

So, when choosing your keywords, think in terms of the services you offer. Such keywords will get plenty of search volume because they have a higher search intent. 

However, that's not the only thing to consider.

The next step in forming your list of essential keywords has to do with your service area. You'll need to combine the service-specific keywords with the data from yours and the surrounding cities. 

Google AdWords can help you in this regard, as you can see some of the search trends in your area. Once you know which keywords have the greatest search volume, you can pinpoint those that you should include in your SEO.


Component #2. Create a Great Website With Unique Content

After you've figured out the keywords, you'll need an amazing website with unique content that targets those keywords. But what does it mean to have "an amazing website"?

In our experience, it means that your site should load quickly and has all quality content, including the parts specific to your keywords and key terms. 

It also means having a page for each of your services. For example, a plumbing company should have a separate page for drain cleaning, water heater repair, and every other service offered.

The same goes for your area. If you’re in Miami, Florida, that would be your primary city. However, most plumbing and HVAC companies serve a radius of 25-30 miles. This means that your Miami-based company should also have pages for Kendall, Palmetto Bay, Miami Beach, and other cities and towns that fall into your radius.

Setting up your website in this manner will help you make sure that your company always comes up in relevant searches.


Component #3. Optimize for the User Experience

When it comes to your website, you should remember that the content isn't made for your computer. It's there for the sake of your customers - the prospects who land on that page. That's why it needs to be optimized for user experience.

Some of the things that go into optimization are:

  • Where will you put your titles?
  • Where will the H1s be?
  • How will you write your meta descriptions?
  • How do you inter-link throughout the website?

Keeping all these in mind, the result should be a website that's easy to understand and navigate. Your visitors should never feel confused about what they're seeing or where they'll end up if they click on a link. 

Getting this right will boost your conversion rates significantly. But getting it wrong will result in a higher bounce rate - people leaving your website without taking action.


Component #4. Build Authority Off-Site

It's important to note that no matter what your website copy says about your service, it can never compare to what other people are saying.

In other words, boosting your credibility is best accomplished off-site. 

The best ways to do so are through citations, web references, and online reviews, but these won't come on their own. You'll have to work on them. 

A good strategy for building up online reviews for your company goes a long way. Positive reviews on Google, Yelp, and other sites will do wonders for your authority, as those are often the first things people look at when searching online. After all, with everything else equal, the company with better reviews will rank and convert better.

Luckily, automation tools can help you with online reviews - automatically requesting a review after every service call is always a useful technique. 

You can do even more to signal to Google that your website is authoritative.

For example, you can get citations or references of your company's name, address, phone number, and website link across the web. These include localized directory sites as well as niche-specific sites. 

Finally, you can build up backlinks - links from other sites to your homepage. 

All of these methods will boost your authority signal generation and get you on top of the SEO game in 2021.

The Formula for a Great Year of SEO

As the rules of SEO keep changing, there's no telling for how long our current formula will continue to work. However, one thing's for sure: it will be a winning recipe for the rest of the year.

While optimizing and reshuffling different aspects of your SEO might seem like a lot of work, it's work that'll pay off in the end.
